The Hewlett Leaders in Student Success program recognizes colleges that demonstrate promising and innovative approaches to student success in basic skills. Their purposeful efforts yield coherent, structured, systematic activities with investment in the assessment and actual improvement.

Classroom practices that are “Learner centered”, e.g. pedagogy, assessment
Integration of academic support and student services
Equity: attention to monitoring success and progress rates by cohort
Institutional leadership & support as reflected in mission, planning and evaluation, and budget
At the Strengthening Student Success Conference in Anaheim on October 2, 2008, Hewlett Leaders in Student Success program’s first honorees were announced: Columbia College, Santa Barbara City College, De Anza College, Southwestern College.
Hewlett Leaders in Student Success is administered by the Research and Planning Group of the California Community Colleges, and funded by The William and Flora Hewlett Foundation. The Foundation has committed to support it for two additional years.
