Beginning in 2008, the Hewlett Leaders in Student Success program annually honors community colleges that demonstrate promising and innovative approaches to success in basic skills. Their programs are outstanding models for other colleges determined to help every student succeed. To this end, the 2009 Hewlett Leaders received $15,000 to support dissemination of their best ideas through peer outreach including colloquia, workshops, and mentorships.

Purposeful efforts yield coherent, structured, systematic activities with investment in assessment and actual improvement in basic skills. The following criteria for success guided the work of the Hewlett Leaders program:
Curriculum aligned and organized for effectiveness
Classroom practices that are “Learner centered”, e.g. pedagogy, assessment
Integration of academic support and student services
Equity: attention to monitoring success and progress rates by cohort
Institutional leadership & support as reflected in mission, planning and evaluation, and budget

At a session of the October 7-9, 2009 Strengthening Student Success Conference in San Francisco, Hewlett Leaders will share successful strategies for improvement in basic skills.
Hewlett Leaders in Student Success is administered by the Research and Planning Group of the California Community Colleges, and funded by The William and Flora Hewlett Foundation. The Foundation has committed to support it for two additional years.
